Handshake AI Fellowship Review (2026): How Projects Work, Payments, and the 10-Hour Referral Rule
Quick answer
Handshake AI is the AI-data arm of Handshake, the US career network for students and graduates. Its "AI Fellowship" is not an academic program: it is a flexible contractor model where fellows are matched to AI training projects — assessments, evaluation, annotation, time-tracked production work.
Pay is project-specific and not published on a public rate card. The referral program is real and documented, but only active contractors can use it. See how it compares on the AI training jobs comparison.
How the fellowship works
You apply once and are considered for projects as they open. If your background matches, Handshake invites you to next steps — assessment, training, evaluation or onboarding. Work is tracked by the hour on the platform, and the help center has dedicated sections on time-tracking standards, verification requirements and an "original work" policy that prohibits using LLMs to produce your submissions.
Because it is contractor work, you set up Stripe for payouts and handle tax forms yourself (US W-9/W-8 style requirements are described in the help center, along with withholding notes for international fellows).
Pay
Rates are set per project and shown to fellows who are invited. Handshake does not publish a general hourly range on a public page we could cite, so we do not quote one. As with every platform here, record the rate in your project brief and count only approved, time-tracked production hours.
Referral program: exact terms
From the "Handshake AI Fellowship Referral Program Terms of Service" (updated 13 August 2026):
- Only active Handshake AI contractors can refer and be paid. You must hold an active account both when you refer and when the bonus is paid.
- A qualified referral must: create an account via your unique link, complete Handshake AI onboarding, complete project-specific onboarding for any project, and complete at least 10 hours of paid production work within 6 months of account creation.
- Bonus amounts are stated inside the program; the public terms describe the conditions, not a fixed table.
There is no public affiliate program for non-contractors.
Who it is for
Students, recent graduates and professionals with a clear academic or professional profile, especially in the US. If you are outside that funnel or want tasks you can start today, Hub.xyz, Crowtado and Mindrift are more open.
What StackPick earns here
Nothing. StackPick is not a Handshake AI contractor and has no referral link; the button below goes straight to the official site.

If you are waiting for a project invitation, Hub accepts contributors worldwide and Crowtado runs phone-based voice and video work. StackPick may earn a commission on these two:
